Huntsville, Ala. ---- Although long committed to human interaction in the educational setting, Alabama A&M University will systematically expand its online degree offerings following a significant advance in spring semester 2013.

With the next academic term, AAMU officials will introduce the online Bachelor of Science degree in management, a program its coordinators say is especially suited “for the nontraditional student” who longs for a degree without the hustle and bustle of coming on a college campus.

Dr. Larry McDaniel, chair of the Department of Management and Marketing in the College of Business and Public Affairs, says AAMU must meet the changing demands of today’s student at all levels. The new program has been approved by both the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

While targeted at the nontraditional student, McDaniel adds that on-campus students also will be able to tap into the online curriculum, if slots are available. The new online management degree will have all of the same course requirements and faculty as the traditional program, says McDaniel.

“Students will register online, interact with advisors and professors online, take their general education courses online, and take their major courses online,” McDaniel notes. “This project marks the first time that the University has offered a degree program that is totally online, from payment to advising and tutoring.” The department chair says social media also will play a role in course delivery.

In a sense, the management program is the proverbial foot in the door. According to Dr. Juarine Stewart, associate provost for undergraduate studies and an additional online undergraduate degree program will be launched in fall 2013. She says an additional online program will be added annually for the next several years.
