"Flipped
learning," in which students watch videos of lessons at home and apply
what they've learned in the classroom under the guidance of their teacher,
is a hot new instructional trend--but it's also drawn its share of critics.
In our lead story this week, ed-tech consultant Alan November and his
colleague, Brian Mull, respond to five common concerns about the flipped
learning approach.
Also, winners of our 2012 Tech-Savvy Superintendent Awards
describe how to be an effective 21st-century leader; a Missouri school
district has reached a settlement after being sued by the ACLU for blocking
students' access to educational sites about gay and lesbian issues; and a
Georgia district has provided a 3D virtual-world environment to every
classroom teacher in its 35 schools.

Question
of the Week: Everyone knows the economy is hurting, and
now, college students say they had no idea how bad paying off loans could
be. Yet, according to a recent study, many schools refuse to teach
financial literacy as part of the curriculum-citing lack of time and
resources. Schools also say that teaching financial literacy is not

literacy be included in high school education? Why or why not? Please
send your response to Online Editor Meris Stansbury at mstansbury@eschoolnews.com.
Your response may be chosen to be included in a thought round-up to be
published by eSchool News. Please send your response by Friday the 6th.
